The Citizen Police Academy is an extension of the department’s community education efforts. The purpose of the academy is to increase citizen awareness of the day-to-day operation of the police department by educating them on topics relative to the police officer in our community. The academy is not intended to make citizens into police officers. Students of the academy are instructed on such topics as criminal law, patrol procedures, criminal justice system, drug investigation, traffic stops, building searches, firearms, and criminal investigation, just to name a few. Citizens who complete the academy will be given the opportunity to volunteer for the police department by joining the alumni association.
